For Harry Potter lovers, a group of very creative and talented fans have created a parody musical (and sequel) for your enjoyment. "A Very Potter Musical" is an unofficial, fan-made, parody show. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great movie. Well, to be more accurate Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great book that was made into a great movie (re-titled Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory in an early attempt at product placement) that was then remade into a kind of mediocre movie. Sadly author Roald Dahl hated the first movie because it took some liberties with his story, and hated the second one even more because he was dead. Maybe he was just grumpy because his parents forgot the key N making his name pointlessly difficult to pronounce.

Seems like a happy fella.

In the original film chocolate factory hallways contorted into MC Escher like optical illusions, walls were fruit flavored lick-able treats and orange faced little people danced around delivering moral messages that explained why chewing gum was in fact bad for you but better still than smoking.

The Cast of Jersey Shore

The Tim Burton directed remake did away with all references to alcohol, tobacco and hellfire and replaced them with a meaningless back story explaining why Willy Wonka was so kooky… not since the Star Wars prequels has an origin story been less relevant. But both versions along with the original source material have some pretty incredible locations. Chocolate rivers flow past edible (or is that eat-able?) meadows and gargantuan mushrooms filled with marshmallow goo. All doors lead to untold excitement, to a fantasy, and to a dream of pure imagination.

Make this real, I mean really for real.

Straight ahead you leave the mundane world behind, turning right you enter a world of unbelievable innovation and futuristic vision, to the left you are thrust into an exotic adventure. It sounds a bit like Disneyland or the Magic Kingdom and in fact the two have a lot in common. The book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was published in 1964, the height of Walt Disney's fame and a heyday for Disneyland. The most telling connection of the two is Harper Goff the extraordinary set designer famously known for creating the Nautilus as it appears in Disney's version of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Harper worked extensively with Disney from designing the Jungle River boats and actually laying out the path the river follows to creating the Golden Horseshoe saloon and much of Main Street. In fact Goff had a major impact on many aspects of Disneyland and later Walt Disney World as well.

Harper however also was the set designer for the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. He created the factory and the SS Wonkatania and the Inventing Room and all of the beautiful fun house visions seen throughout the film. I always wished that the original Wonka movie was made by Disney, it feels like it should have been made by Disney (except for that part where the chicken gets its head cut off and Willy is acting like he is on an acid trip… or come to think of it maybe precisely because of that moment). Beyond that I yearned for (and still do) a Wonkaland at the parks… it is such a no brainer. It is a perfect fit for Disney Hollywood Studios and Harper has already done all the heavy lifting, the land and the ride are pretty much designed and all ready to go.

There actually is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride in England, but it sucks.
Only Disney coudl really do this justice, Universal could as well but then Willy would
end up blowing something up just before sneezing on us.

Just like in the film iron gates guard the perimeter of the land… WONKA flickers from huge smokestacks looming in the distance. Just outside the gates a candy store mimics that of the film filled to the brim with chocolate bars of all shapes and sizes, slender glass jars of brilliantly hued hard candies are backlit to reveal their jewel tones and taffy pulling machines crank out the gooey good stuff. Charlie's ramshackle little house can be seen on the hill but we forge forward along the red carpet over the cobblestones and are welcomed inside the magical palace of sweet excess into a world where anything can happen.

A world where anything can happen… this is exactly what I thought the first time I went to the Magic Kingdom and I would guess that if you have navigated the myriad mazes of the internet to end up here you too have had such an epiphany. Perhaps it was Disneyland or EPCOT Center, maybe it was 1955 or 1982 but the results were the same, your imagination allowed you to be transported away from the humdrum and into a fantastical fantasy transformed into a shockingly tangible reality. The fact that the film premiered the same year that Walt Disney World opened may be a coincidence but it made the connection that much stronger to me. My first visits to both Walt's and Willy's Worlds were pretty much at the same time and the two always were inseparable in my mind.

Two of a kind.

The Wonka ride of my dreams continues as guests (golden tickets in hand) wind past diminishing hallways and beyond fanciful candy making contraptions before proceeding to a ride on the chocolate river and a finale in the glass elevator. Ah yes, the glass elevator, as Harper Goff envisioned it might as well have been an escape pod from the Nautilus. The Victorian "Steam Punk" vibe was heavy; a brass chassis accented by a plethora of buttons and controls and an ornate bullet design. Of course we could opt for the vision of the glass elevator from the Burton film or in other words a poorly computer generated rectangle with a jet pack strapped on the top but lets stick with the good stuff and the eventual point of this post. Disney may have never created a Willy Wonka ride with an elevator that can go "up and down, sideways, slantways, and any other ways you can think of" but they have in fact created many marvelous elevator effects incorporated into a wide spectrum of attractions and experiences around the world.

Sure, it's more like the Great Brass elevator but cool nonetheless.

Yes, an elevator can be a totally functional, boring even, part of daily life… or it can spring to life as an added layer of detail, as an attraction in an of itself, as something special and something more than it needed to be. It is this type of additional thought and care that exemplifies why fans love the best of Disney.

Normally I would not attempt to assemble a comprehensive list, I have learned from watching Shane flounder around that this is a trap. However with Shane off tanning himself in Hawaii (Normally the guy just hits the tanning beds, we call him Snookie behind his back) I must cowboy up and present you with:

The Top 10 Disney Elevators:

10) Cinderella's Castle elevator (Magic Kingdom):

This is a bit of a cheat… first of all because it no longer exists in quite this form, secondly because it was never open to the public, and thirdly because it was not themed at all but nonetheless based purely and selfishly on my own personal experiences it earns number 10. From the parks opening all the way to the addition of the Castle Dream Suite there has been an elevator that one could ride from the ground level utilidors under the castle to very near the top of the turrets. As a cast member I covertly took the trip several times. I was not authorized to do so, I do not believe that I was encouraged to do so either, but I did anyway. As a result I got to step out onto the balconies of the upper floors and pier down across the park, lording over it like a true king in a living dream. Pretty freaking cool and the vague danger associated with the whole operation only heightened the thrill.

Now you either need a really big set or a really big wallet to get here.

9) Elevator to Club 33 (Disneyland):

It's only this low on the list because once again it is not something most people have a chance to experience (though these days it feels like admission to Club 33 comes with every ticket sold). Slipping past the discretely marked door in New Orleans Square guests step foot into a small foyer and reception area before being led forward and faced with a dilemma. Would you prefer to enter the private Club 33 dining rooms by traversing a staircase or be whisked there by an antique caged French lift? The choice should be obvious, especially if you know the history that Walt Disney himself tried to import the elevator this was based on from a hotel after a stay there. Upon being refuted he tasked the imagineers with creating their very own. Slide the door shut and enjoy your one story ride into the arms of elite luxury and also just so-so overpriced country club level food… but it's not the filet that brought you here in the first place now was it?

Choose Wisely.

8) Walt Disney Family Museum train ride elevator (San Francisco):

Yea, I know, the Walt Disney Company did not have anything officially to do with designing this very well realized museum, but Imagineering influences are clearly all over it. There are many wonderful touches and flat out jaw-dropping moments in this place but perhaps one of the subtlest and least expected takes place when visitors travel from the lower floor galleries up a level to continue the tour. Rather than simply a ride up to the next level the elevator is decorated with red velvet curtains and windows complete with shades and a view. Guests realize that this is not actually an elevator at all but rather a train car (if a bit oddly proportioned one). As the lift rises narration tells us about Disney's trip aboard the train to California and the start of something big.

The small stuff counts.

7) Walt Disney Concert Hall scenic elevator (Los Angeles):

Again not technically affiliated with the Walt Disney Company but still infused with a little extra attention to detail. This is not particularly flashy and it lacks any obvious Disney touch but it is as close to the glass elevator from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (or better yet it's sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator) as you are likely to find. Elegant in its simplicity and sheer minimal modern aesthetic its glass walls, door and ceiling make you feel as though you are floating through a huge Apple store or perhaps have been transported to the year 3000. This substantiates that you don't have to dip everything in pixie dust to make it "magical".

A place this beautiful better have a cool elevator... but you should see the bathrooms!

6) Disney's Dream cruise ship main lobby elevator (Caribbean cruises):

It is about taking the mundane and making it something a bit special. From the Mickey Mouse gloved hand floor indicators to the ornate scroll metal work on the railings this elevator is clearly not one you would find at the local mall, or even a premium "Deluxe" level Disney resort. However it is the nice surprise that takes place inside the elevator that elevates (yes, cheap pun) the experience. Through the large glass walls a cavalcade of Disney's most beloved characters reveal themselves in between floors, all 11 of them. From the flying house in Up to classic characters such as Dumbo and Peter Pan if it is an airborne animated Disney personality you'll find it here.

Feels a little Pixar heavy to me.

5) DisneyQuest Ventureport elevator (Walt Disney World, formerly Chicago):

In an attempt to set the stage for what Disney hoped would be an ongoing interactive multimedia virtual reality (and any other mid 90's tech terms they could possibly conjure up) franchise DisneyQuest made it clear that this was not your local arcade right from the start. Guests pass through the lobby and are directed onto elevators to take them to the Ventureport… the hub of the attraction. Once on board the lights dim and through some simple Pepper's Ghost style presentations the Genie from Aladdin cracks wise while unintentionally making the short trip feel oh so much longer. Despite the tired humor, not so much the actual jokes but rather just the whole idea of a self reverent pop culture skewering animated jester (Shrek, I'm looking at you), the addition of the Genie and the unexpected and well executed presentation prove that a trip up a couple of floors can be made into a traveling theater surprisingly well.

45 Seconds never felt so long.

4) Journey to the Center of the Earth Terravator (Tokyo Disney Sea):

You didn't think any Disney list of the best of anything could slip by without including something from the Tokyo parks did you? In case you did not know this yet Disney hates you… they only love the Japanese and only the Japanese get the good stuff. At least it seems that way most of the time. In this case the awesome Journey to the Center of the Earth is preceded by one of the (maybe THE) coolest queues ever. As part of the pre-show / queue experience we descend down to a home base deep within the Earth's core via the Terravator. Featuring Victorian era Jules Verne inspired designs the subterranean elevator shimmies and shakes, the walls rumble as we hear rock and earth clatter by. Gauges spin, lights flicker and there is a palpable sense of heat and humidity in the air. The relatively narrow space coupled with the high windowless walls gives a sense of claustrophobia and makes the comparatively wide vistas seen when the doors open that much more dramatic and effective. Bonus points for the fact that what feels like a trip hundreds of meters down is in fact a trip UP a couple of floors to set up the ride, awesome.

The Chilean miners may have been OK with it had they been given this.

3) The Living Seas Hydrolators (Formerly at EPCOT):

The Hydrolators are perhaps the quintessential example of Disney adding extra detail simply to enhance the experience of an attraction. There was no physical need for them; they in fact went nowhere, and no financial benefit either (no Hyrdolator action sets were ever sold though honestly I probably would have purchased one had they been). The illusion for guests was that of descending deep below the ocean surface down to the visitor center of Sea Base Alpha, the fictional undersea scientific research facility that served as the conceit of the pavilion. After watching an admittedly dull and yet still oddly dramatic film (The DELUGE) guests entered a loading room made up of suspended floors held over bubbling pools of water. Guests entered one of three Hydrolators, the walls shook, the floor dropped a few inches and most convincingly endless rockwork scrolled by seen through large glass windows as tiny air bubbles enveloped the cab. Background announcements detailing the air lock procedure and docking ports help sell the effect. We welcome you to The Living Seas. We welcome you to Sea Base Alpha.

2) Haunted Mansion Portrait Gallery (Disneyland):

In Stark contrast to our number three pick number two is strictly a functional device born out of necessity and hidden from awareness for the mass majority of its many visitors. The original Haunted Mansion has a very long and winding back-story, one that has books, websites and thesis length analysis devoted to it. Certainly a history too convoluted for us to tackle here. Suffice it to say that the imagineers needed to figure out a way to get guests down below the berm and out of the traditional park boundaries. They could have herded them into a series of traditional elevators or sent them down huge staircases but instead they took the opportunity to "plus" the experience and created the first show scene of the attraction that just happens to occur before guests even board the ride (thus blurring the line as to when the queue ends and the show begins). From the foyer guests enter the Portrait Gallery more commonly known as the stretch rooms. Visitors experience an aura of foreboding, almost as if they sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Well actually yes it is as in fact it is a giant elevator which drops down to the basement level allowing access to the main show building out back. Few normal park visitors (ie: none of our readers and certainly not a parkeologist) are aware that what appears as a parlor trick is in reality a required trip beneath the railroad tracks.

The Mansion elevator is a little known obscure fact about a seldom discussed attraction.
Next time you are in the parks mention it to your Disney trivia expert friends
to really impress them!

1) Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (Disney Hollywood Studios):

This one is a bit obvious I guess. A huge mega successful E-Ticket attraction based solely around an elevator, how could it not be number one on our list?

Perhaps the only real question is which version of this now classic attraction makes the grade? In this case despite the superior architecture and intricate detail of the Tokyo Disney Sea version I am giving the nod to the original at Walt Disney World. Not only did it set the bar very high for all similar attractions that would follow but also the Florida version comes close to performing some of the tricks that the glass elevator from the chocolate factory can; not only does it move up and down but forward and backwards as well. Plunging 13 stories down, bouncing up in a rapid yo-yo like fashion and delivering thrills while maintaining the highest level of theme and detail the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror rules the roost.

There is always room on the list however should Disney one day wise up and decide to build my dream ride… I'm happy to make room for Wonka's great glass elevator any time they are ready.

Childhood Time Warp!

Have you ever had one of those moments when you feel like you just went back in time for a few seconds? Well, I had that exact feeling as I ran across this picture from Toy Story 3 posted online by TS3's director Lee Unkrich. When I clicked on the link for the picture below, I started reminiscing how much I enjoyed seeing Toy Story 3 with my own kids. Then suddenly, I noticed something familiar in the frame and slowly zoomed in on the lunch box - I was looking at the same lunch box I carried to school as a kid!

It was as though at that moment I was again sitting in my elementary classroom, thinking about the lunch ahead (not the lesson at hand, of course - you gotta have your priorities), and anticipating grabbing off the shelf the coolest pail ever, my Six Million Dollar Man / Steve Austin lunch box. What was even better is that my lunch box had a matching thermos inside filled with either milk or soup (whatever mom wanted to fill it with). To be honest, it wasn't much about the PB&J and other treats inside, it was more about the opportunity at lunch to escape into my Six Million Dollar Man memories for a few minutes.

For those of you who have grown up totally immersed with Woody and Buzz Lightyear (thinking of you David, my oldest son), Steve Austin was the hero of my childhood. I had a Steve Austin figurine that had bionic limbs and the even better, a bionic eye that I could peer through and see a flash of light! There wasn't anything the Six Million Dollar Man couldn't do. Jamie Summers, the Bionic Woman, was pretty cool too, but nothing truly matched up to Steve Austin meeting with Oscar and getting his top secret orders.

Thank you Lee Unkrich for the easter egg you placed in Toy Story 3 and online, it was fun taking this trip down memory lane!

Sarah and I took a few days off to start Spring Break camping with our kids in Jacksonville. It proved to be a great time and even allowed us to camp with some friends from Ocala and for me to re-establish contact with a friend I first met in 4th Grade. This is a self-portrait of Sarah and I on Atlantic Beach next to the Kathryn Abbey Hanna city park of Jacksonville. You can see the storms heading in behind us, but we never actually got the rain. What a blast for all of us! Wish you all were there too :)

One of our regular events is to visit Disney's Hollywood Studios and the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Lights on New York Street. We found a great thing to do in the Innoventions area of EPCOT Center of Walt Disney World in Orlando. There is a live game show presented by The Velcro Family of Companies that tells you all about hook and loop technology. At the end of the fun show (and who know if you might actually be pulled up on stage as a contestant too) you exit the theatre to find a play area with hook and loop shapes. You can make different color frogs with all sorts of accessories. Here are a couple of the fun frogs we created and then put on Mema Leppert's back as we went around the park. Lots of fun!

What a great time we had as a family over Thanksgiving camping at Stone Mountain, Georgia. We might be looking a bit rough here, but here is a glimpse at some of our fun at Stone Mountain Park over Thanksgiving. It was BRRRRR cold at first, then got rainy. This is the cold part. I love this picture because David tries sometimes to get in the back of other pictures with odd looks on his face, and he did it again. Not to mention this is a great picture of Rebekah and me. I know you can barely see it, but Stone Mountain Park, specifically The Crossroads, was covered with more Christmas lights than ever and it was beautiful. I'll add more pictures soon.

We recently took my father-in-law to Harry's for his 65th birthday celebration. My oldest son ordered Jambalaya and in it he found a large piece of chicken. After eating the chicken, it left the impression of a slight grin... what you see is what resulted a few minutes later! You can't help grinning at Jambalaya when it is grinning back at you! Yummy.

Have you ever played around with the letters in words to make new words. Well then you have found the anagrams included. One of the first ones I remember was "Race Car" and how it simply spells itself backwards. Along those same lines, anagrams can go much further. I recently watched a documentary called "Word Play" which tracked some fierce competetors on the Scrabble board game circuit. It seems that anagrams, and the ability to decode them, are a necessity to be successful.

Paint This Town with a Slingshot!

This event is a few years old, but the idea takes us back to our childhood. Also, the video below is lots of fun. The inventor Johnny Chung Lee and friend Joshua Atlas were involved in a public art demonstration on May 6, 2005 in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Both men designed a giant slingshot as part of a public art expo to involve the Pittsburgh community in turning a high-rise into one of the largest art displays before it met it's demise being demolished. The two men with community members placed large paintballs in the slingshot and hurled them on the side of the high-rise building.

An Inside Look at My Hand Surgery

Yes, this is an edited look at my hand surgery for those of you with tempermental tummies. Despite how this may look, that is NOT blood you see, instead it is Betadine (sp?) used to clean my hand thoroughly before the surgery began. The hand on the top with the glove is my surgeon, the thumb below is mine. I have more spectacular shots, but thought this was the most appropriate for the blog. My surgery was to remove a small ganglian cyst that had grown to the size of a marble at the base of my index and second finger of my left hand. Not sure why it happened, but it happened quickly. Everything went well, and I am currently bandaged as I type. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers! Sarah was able to be present for the procedure and could see the inner workings of my hand.

Look very close, this is a very rare species that has not been photographed very often - this is the Flamingo Man!

On a recent visit to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival I found myself chuckling when I saw this guy in a full sprint for the bathroom. I guess if you have to go, it really doesn't matter what you are wearing, I can only imagine the snickering that took place while standing at the urinal. Go Flamingo Man, Go!

Entertaining Rachel Ray!

It is like one of those amazing dreams you start in middle school and never seem to get out of your head. Well, here is proof that a dream can become reality! My longtime friend Jim recently entered Mario Batali's Ultimate Grilling Challenge with a short video. The challenge was simple, submit a video of an original dish created on the grill with some Italian connection. Jim, a longtime lover of food and cooking, took the challenge and with the help of Pam, his wife, submitted the video below. Well, to make a long (but exciting) story short, Jim won the whole challenge. Part of his spoils was to attend a NASCAR event at Texas Motor Speedway and to grill with Mario Batali and Rachel Ray. I think these couple of pictures truly show the highlight of Jim winning the Grilling Challenge. Thanks Mario Batali for selecting Jim Webster for this, he truly deserves it, and thanks Rachel Ray for hanging on Jim's every word, you rock!

The 39 Clues - The Maze of Bones!

Wow! The new book by Rick Riordan titled "The Maze of Bones" is part of a 10 novel series to be written by several combined top authors called "The 39 Clues." My son found this Scholastic release at his school book fair and has become totally enveloped. It reminds me of the Harry Potter reading frenzy. Jonathan has read nearly half of the book in one night and cannot wait to read more. The best way I can describe this book / series so far is like a Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew on steroids. This is a fast paced spy story based around the Cahill family who have connections to many of the most important things and people in history. This book teaches readers about many historical figures and fictional, while throwing in an online aspect as well. Visiting the official website, www.the39steps.com, will let you open a free account and begin collecting trading cards (also available for purchase) to assist you with finding the 39 clues. Some clues will only be available online.

This web-based connection allows readers to explore the story further while organzing their clues. This is a fantastic idea. The next book will be released in early December and will be written by Gordon Korman titled "One False Note." If you haven't read this book yet, or want something to inspire your child to read more, this is the series!

Fishsticks in the Wild!

Did you ever wonder while eating dinner what those yummy fishsticks actually looked like in the wild? Here are some very rare photos that caught that very situation. What is amazing to me is their graceful swimming despite any visible means to move, breathe or see. I guess this explains why fish sticks are so rare to capture on camera, and why they are so popular with commercial fishermen for selling in stores. Serpent Mound, Ohio's Treasure!

One of my fondest trip memories as a kid growing up in central Ohio was a visit to Serpent Mound State Park in southern Ohio. This is an Indian (Native American) mound built by two different native American groups. The first group were the Adena people and later the Fort Ancient culture. The exact purpose of this mound remains a mystery since it is not a burial mound and does not seem to hold any artifacts. At one point, a farmer who owned this land was on the verge of selling for growing corn when a group out of Boston decided to step in and save this amazing piece of history. Some additional information regarding The Great Serpent Mound:
Serpent Mound is a man-made earthwork in the shape of a long, uncoiling serpent nearly a quarter of a mile long. Created between 1000 and 1500 AD for unknown purposes, it is now protected in a state park in Ohio.

History
Two different cultures contributed to the Serpent Mound site. The earliest is the Adena people, who lived in this area from about the 6th century BC to the early 1st century AD. Based on stone axes and other artifacts, we know that the Adena built the two conical burial mounds near the serpent. Other Adena burial mounds in the area indicate that the Adenans buried their dead in log tombs or clay-lined basins; important individuals were painted in red ocher and buried with valuable grave goods. A third, elliptical-shaped burial mound at the park and a village site near the serpent effigy's tail belong to the Fort Ancient culture, who lived here from about 1000 to 1550 AD. The Serpent Mound itself had proved more difficult to date, as no artifacts have been found in the mound itself that could connect it to either culture. It was generally assumed that it belonged to the Adena people. However, a recent excavation of Serpent Mound (1995) uncovered wood charcoal that could be radiocarbon dated. Test results show that the charcoal, and therefore the mound's construction, dates to about 1070 AD. It thus belongs to the much later Fort Ancient culture. The Serpent Mound and surrounding burial mounds were first surveyed and sketched in the 1840s, and first excavated by the Harvard archaeologist F.W. Putnam in the late 19th century. When Putnam visited in 1886, the serpent was in bad shape — half-destroyed by amateur excavators looking for treasure and badly eroded by rain. The farmer who owned the mound was about to sell the land for growing corn, a fate that had already destroyed hundreds of other mounds. But Bostonians raised the money to buy the land, saving it for us to see today. In 1900, it was given to Ohio and turned into a state park.

What to See
Serpent Mound is 1,200 feet (366 m) long and about 5 feet (1.5 m) high. Made of earth, it is formed in the shape of an uncoiling snake about to swallow an egg-shaped oval in its open mouth. The head of the serpent is aligned to the summer solstice sunset and the coils also may point to the winter solstice sunrise and the equinox sunrise. The specific purpose of this impressive effigy remains a mystery. It was never used for burials. Some have speculated that the vast earthwork was an offering to the gods. It certainly seems meant to be seen from above: the serpent is difficult to see from ground level. Visitors can now climb a tower to appreciate its shape. The coil of the serpent's tail is a common sacred symbol throughout the ancient world and often symbolizes the sacred forces of the earth. This may suggest that the mound-builders worshipped the earth as a divine mother. Some New Age practitioners have suggested that Serpent Mound is patterned on the Little Dipper constellation, which could indicate a cosmic energy flow between heaven and earth. Others have analyzed the mounds (along with others in the area) for ley lines, which are believed to conduct healing energy between ancient sacred sites. New Age groups and individuals often use the site for meditation. Serpent Mound has been a public park for more than a century and visitors may walk along a wooded footpath surrounding the serpent. Also in the area are three burial mounds and an ancient village site. An on-site museum has exhibits on the effigy mound and the geology of the surrounding area.

Here's to our favorite Ultimate Grilling Champion - Jim Webster!

Friends were glued to their tubes in several different TV markets trying to get the first glimpse of Jim Webster's status as possible "Grilling Champion" in the Mario Batali Grilling Challenge contest. Jim received official word via the phone as it was broadcast live from the South Florida TV Market who broadcast the Rachel Ray Show earliest at 9:00am on Friday. Shortly thereafter, the announcement was revealed on the Rachel Ray Show site and then was broadcast in the Central Florida Television Market. I called my dear friend since middle school and wished him congrats about 10:20am. Way to go Jim, we are so proud of you and now Mario Batali and Rachel Ray will get to sample some of this grilling masterpiece and perhaps more. Next, the world! On a side note, be sure to wear your sleeveless sweater-vest and orange crocs, it seems like Mario has a real liking to those. Again, great job - You Da Man!

Mystery Photos on my Camera

I was unloading photos from my digital camera the other day and came across some mysterious black and white photos. While those pictured in the photos looked vaguely familiar, including the pet dog, I didn't remember when they had been taken or by whom. I can derive from the evidence in the photo, however, that the two individuals pictured must have commandeered my camera and were playing around. Honestly, I thought this was one of the best pictures (out of the MANY they created). I guess this is a variation on the modern photo booth concept, however our kids have a lot more than just four photos to try and play with. I love this photo guys, thanks for surprising your dad with it!

I shared a bit about this hidden area of Walt Disney World inside the Magic Kingdom a week or so ago. Here is another photo opportunity within this venue. It is nice that you can get fun pictures ranging from the earliest Disney cartoons (Steamboat Willie here) to some of the more recent such as Toy Story. The kids always enjoy staging their own fun!

Tuesdays With Morrie at OCT

The Special Presentations series at Ocala Civic Theatre opened with an amazing play. Randall Moring and Terry Gabbard masterfully perform the roles of a college professor and college student who develop a friendship showing how much more there is to life than focusing on death. Both Randall and Terry transform into their characters, and envelop the audience in the scenes. This two man show runs about 90 minutes without intermission and is worth every second. Sammie the Amazing Dog!

Here is the dog of the century, the most amazing dog ever! His only downfall is that he only comes sometimes when called, he never tells us when he needs to go outside, he runs away from people therefore must stay on a leash even around the house (except in this picture for some reason) and occasionally barks at phantom animals in the yard. You the dog Sam!

I ran across this picture of a Donald Duck Cola cap and immediately thought of my dad. His favorite Disney character was Donald Duck, perhaps because he was a bit hard to understand, did things his own way, was often misunderstood, but was ultimately brilliant. I'm not totally sure why dad identified so well with Donald Duck, but I do know one thing, we all miss you Dad!

Gators crush the Tigers

What a game! It was full of excitement and surprises. Given the Gator win over LSU last night 51 to 21, could this be a preview of a SEC Conference game? If so, let's hope the outcome is slanted on our side the same way. Great job Florida Gators, especially making the Swamp a place of fear!

You've Got A Friend In Me - Toy Story

When Walt Disney World renamed Disney / MGM Studios to Disney's Hollywood Studios, there was another face lift that happened shortly thereafter. The area north of the backlot and behind the Chinese Theater also got big changes. This became the Disney / Pixar area and the sound stage that had served as the game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" transformed into an amazing ride called Toy Story Mania. Brick was added everywhere, both sides of the street, and Toy Story related stuff appeared as well. This Scrabble board with green army men is directly across the street from Toy Story Mania. Inside this building are winding mazes of Toy Story ephemera leading the youngest visitors to their favorite characters for pictures. The windows to the street make this a fun thing to watch as the kids get to experience their favorite characters up close.

Disney's Toy Story and Main Street Cinema Fun

In the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida there is a very special town hall area that very few people know about. As you pass under the railroad to the right side, near the entrance, there is a photography store and restaurant off to the right. As you enter the photo store, you continue back to the rear and down a wide hallway. Near the end of the hallway, and to the right you will find this exhibition hall that includes many photo opportunities (like the Toy Story one below) and a small theatre playing Walt Disney cartoons in succession. This is where the Main Street Cinema was re-located a few years ago. This is a nice, air-conditioned, resting place for all Disney visitors. We visit occasionally, however rarely see more than a couple other people enjoying this special space in WDW. We hope others will enjoy as well!

I've found the spot!

Last time we went fishing with Uncle Tom we surveyed the lake and picked out a few different spots to try and catch "the big one." Unfortunately, "the big one" eluded us, but Rebekah was successful in finding an incredible spot. Miraculously, only she was able to catch anything from that spot, despite the efforts of her brother trying to cast his bait into the same spot. Rebekah landed 5 fish (we believe all different) from the same spot. Perhaps they were all siblings and loved the same type of bait because they were all about the same size. Anyhow, we were schooled that day on how to fish since Rebekah was really the only person able to catch anything! Way to go Sis!

Disney's Toy Story Mania - Amazing Score!

Recently my family visited Walt Disney World and more specifically, Disney's Hollywood Studios (our favorite). We constantly try to find the best way to rack up high scores in the new ride, Toy Story Mania, and here is one of the best! Congrats to my family for this. Congrats to my good friend Jim Webster! As many of you know, Jim entered the Mario Batali Grilling Contest by submitting his original recipe "Pig-Stuffed, Pig-Wrapped Pig." The video Jim submitted is above for your viewing pleasure. Shortly after Jim submitted his video entry, he found out he was selected as a Quarter-Finalist and that web-based voting would take place. Well, today the top three semi-finalists were revealed and Jim made it! What's next? - on October 20, the winner will be revealed on the Rachel Ray Show and then who knows... I believe Jim's original "Pig-Stuffed, Pig-Wrapped Pig" recipe is truly the tastiest and original, giving him a real chance at the win. Let's all tune in on October 20th to Rachel Ray's show, hopefully the win will go to Jim! Congrats again Jim, way to go!

I was looking through and filing some pictures on my computer when I came across this picture of Jonathan last year when we camped at Stone Mountain in Georgia. He loves to perform for the camera, this picture is just oozing with attitude. Can't you see him saying "Uh huh, you know it!" with his arms crossed and the slight turn of his head. We always have a great time camping at Stone Mountain and come home with tons of pictures. What a great place for family memories!

Did you ever wonder how Walt Disney himself surveyed the once undeveloped Florida landscape and made his own quick trips from California to Orlando in the early stages of Walt Disney World? Well, here it is! This is the private jet of Walt Disney and his family. It sits quietly behind the "Lights, Motors, Action" theatre of Disney's Hollywood Studios and can be seen on the Backlot Tour. You only get a moment and a slight mention, so don't blink! Look closely and you can see Mickey painted on the tail.

You Go Girl - Way To Fish!

Rebekah showed not only her brother Jon up, but she also showed up the boat owner and her dad. Rebekah managed to land 5 fish in one day (to Jon's one). Only catch (sorry about the pun there) is that her fish were the size you see. Nonetheless, great job Sis - I also love the action shot! I'm also proud that you have no problem removing the hooks and practice catch & release. Uncle Tom (the boat owner) and I went fishless - guess age and practice doesn't really matter.

Oh Yeah - Look at My Fish!

We visited Uncle Tom yesterday at his fishing cabin. Rebekah hit the mother load with 5 different (we think different, however they all looked very similar) 2 to 3 inch fish. Jonathan had nothing even close to a nibble the entire time, despite his best efforts to cross lines with his sister and trying to cast his hook within inches of where Rebekah had landed it. We tried to explain that he needed to leave it still for a while so the fish could find it and not be scared, I think he had Jimmy Houston cast and reel technique going all day! Anyhow, we pulled the boat back to the dock at sunset and after getting most items off the boat, Uncle Tom suggested that the kids drop their lines of the front of the dock. No more than seconds after Jonathan dropped his line, this whopper (in Jon's book) snatched and ran. He cried, "I've got a fish!" and proceeded to pull it in. The look on his face describes exactly how he felt and what he said over and over, "Oh Yeah - I caught a fi-ish!" Way to go Rebekah and Jonathan, I'm very proud of both of you and your new-found fishing prowess.

New Spaceship Earth at EPCOT!

Our family loves the new changes that were made to Spaceship Earth in Disney's EPCOT Center. I have a preview video of this ride available on my YouTube page (click here to see it!). The video was shot prior to the official opening and some of the elements of the ride have changed even since then. At the end of the ride, the pictures of who was riding in a cart are cropped and put on space costumes. Here is a shot from when Jonathan and Rebekah rode it recently!

After watching Mississippi (Ole Miss) perform a huge upset on the Florida Gators, I was a bit frustrated. I found these pictures I had taken outside with my new camera (at the time) and decided to create a collage with them. It pretty much sums up my feelings for the Gators right now - Scattered! This collage is a pretty neat feature in the new Picasa 3 Beta that anyone can download from Google. Picasa 3 software catalogs all your pictures, video, etc. and then lets you create videos, slideshows, collages, etc. from everything. You can even blog directly through the software. It is amazing!
